"Time and money spent in helping men (others) to do more for themselves is far better than mere giving."

-Henry Ford

DSI seeks the support of individuals, corporations, businesses, and philanthropic organizations to help us better achieve our mission of helping people with disabilities become more productive and fulfilled citizens

Corporate and personal contributions to DSI are:

  • An investment in the community
  • A reflection of solid community support and caring
  • A means an individual can make a lasting legacy of hope and fulfillment to persons with disabilities and their families.

DSI offers a variety of giving options that are tailored to best suit your means to give.

Ways to Give:

Securities
A gift of long-term appreciated securities can be deducted at full fair market value while avoiding capital gains tax.

Real Estate
Gifts of real estate can include homes, condominiums, apartments, undeveloped land, farmland, and rental property. Gifts of long-term appreciated real estate offer tax advantages similar to appreciated securities.

Bequests
You may leave a percentage share of your estate or specify the dollar amount.

Life Insurance Policy
You assign the policy and beneficiary rights to DSI. The charitable tax deduction will be for the present cash value of the policy. If the donor continues to pay annual premiums, these, too, are tax deductible. The future benefit to DSI will be the face value of the policy.

Charitable Remainder Trust
You place assets in trust and receive income for life. You may also designate a spouse, children, or others to receive the income. You receive a charitable deduction, avoid capital gains tax, and remove the asset from your taxable estate. The asset eventually passes to your fund at DSI.

Charitable lead Trust
This trust pays our income to DSI for a specified number of years. When the term is up, the principal can be returned to you, your estate, or to your designated beneficiaries. You pay no income or capital gains taxes on this asset during the period of control by the fund.

Life Estate
You can contribute your home or farm but retain the right to live in it for life. After your lifetime, its value will be added to your fund with DSI. You receive an income tax deduction, avoid capital gains tax, and exempt the property from estate taxes.

Trust Fund
If you are the beneficiary of a trust that pays you a regular income, you may assign a portion of this income to the fund. You pay no further tax on this income and may take an income tax deduction for the value of the assignment.

Individual Retirement
The IRA that helps you and your spouse face retirement years can be used to reduce income and estate taxes before it reaches your hands. By naming DSI the plan beneficiary, you can ensure that all of the assets will continue to benefit your community.

Special Events
To generate financial support and awareness for services for persons with disabilities, DSI conducts special fundraising events such as its annual golf tournament. Individuals may volunteer time or contribute through a variety of sponsorship options.

What does your contribution support?

Early Intervention
DSI's First Steps programs and services are available for infants and toddlers that may be at risk for developmental disabilities or delays.

School Support
Supports are available for families that have children with developmental disabilities in the school system.

Vocational and Life Skills Opportunities
DSI offers many training and learning opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Individuals attain community-based employment through job placement services, which match job requirements with their job skills and career goals.

Vocational skills can also be acquired within the agency through work contracted with local business and industry. Greater independence in day-to-day living (budgeting for example) can be achieved through skills acquired from DSI as well.

The Community Team
DSI can assist individuals in becoming more involved with their community by helping them establish connections. Based upon the individual's choice, this could include getting a membership with a community organization or getting involved with church activities.

Services at Home (Medicaid Waiver Services)
DSI is not only an agency focused on serving people with developmental disabilities in their natural home. For them, Respite Care and Medicaid Waiver programs may best enhance the quality of life for all members of the family.

Group Home Living
If there is an interest in securing a placement that includes supervision and training for a family member, DSI group homes may more adequately meet the needs of the individual.

Other Services
Central Counseling Associates is an individual and family counseling service that serves individuals with mental retardation or mental illness.

Epilepsy Services provide information and resources on epilepsy.

DSI offers transportation as a support to the individuals served by the agency.

Your support does make a difference

Charitable gifts to DSI have made a tremendous difference in the lives of many adults and children with mental, physical, and emotional challenges in your community.

Contributions great and small have had a significant positive impact - and not just in terms of providing essential programs which will help many people with challenges become productive, contributing citizens.

This is just a small sample of what a caring and visionary community has accomplished:

  • Enabled an individual to purchase eyeglasses
  • Repaired a car allowing someone to go to work
  • Helped an individual purchase a burial plot for a loved one
  • Purchased a lawn mower
  • Dental care
  • Help with rent
  • Purchased a clothes dryer for individuals living in a group home
  • Assistance with gas and electric bills
  • Home appliances
  • Enabled individuals to explore their artistic talents
  • Special events such as a Christmas party for infants and toddlers

Your support does make a difference

Walter, a Greensburg resident who, through hard work (two jobs); vocational and daily living skills training from DSI; and community support, was able to finally achieve the "American Dream" and purchase his own home.

"I wanted my own home," says Walter. "Someplace where I could have a yard so my dog Toby could run and play. My own place."

Walter is a shining example of what can be accomplished when community support and effective skills training are combined.

Unfortunately, the resources that helped Walter achieve the quality of life that he now enjoys is not available for everyone.

For example, people with disabilities stand the least chance of any social group of ever attaining their own home. Less than one percent of persons with disabilities in this State ever attain a place they can truly call their own - far fewer than any ethnic or economic population.

Your support does make a difference

Just a few years ago life for Cindy Edwards was filled with frustration. She wanted to work, but few employers would take a chance on her. She wanted a family, but she was concerned about the development of her young son.

With the help of DSI's Community Employment Program, Cindy has acquired the vocational skills and job connections she needed to be a valuable employee. Through DSI's Infant/Toddler program, her pride and joy, Joshua, received therapy services and Cindy learned how carry out the program activities on her own.

Cindy and Joshua are shining examples of what can be accomplished when community support and effective skills training are combined.

Unfortunately, the resources that helped Cindy and Joshua achieve the quality of life that they now enjoy are not available to everyone.

We are working to change that, and you can help with a charitable tax-deductible gift to DSI. Your donation will benefit people in your community.

Thank-you
