Residential & Community Living
Facilities
DSI group homes are designed to blend naturally into the neighborhood. Each house serves between five and eight individuals who reside in Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Jackson, and Jennings counties.
In addition to the common family living areas (kitchen, living room, laundry room), residents either share bedroom space or have a private bedroom. Unique features of these homes include a fire alarm system that is more sophisticated then those in other residences. Each facility has a vehicle dedicated to the transportation needs of those residents.

Training
Residents are assessed annually to determine their strongest attributes as well as areas for personal growth. A program is then specifically designed to address these areas and help the individual constantly reach greater levels of self-reliance.
A person-centered program might include using money when grocery shopping, ordering when eating out, or recognizing community signs and resource locations.
The group home also provides recreational activities for the residents, a wellness program emphasizing proper diet, and a complete set of medical care services.

Staff
Group home employees complete a rigorous orientation program in which they must earn state certification in the administration of medications.
At least two staff are on duty at each home during the evening hours and weekends. They provide training for residents that assist them with meal preparation, housework, laundry, proper hygiene, and recreation activities.
Assisting staff in carrying out training activities is a supervisor, a QMRP (Qualified Mental Retardation Professional), registered nurse, social worker, administrative assistant, and a maintenance assistant.

Quality
Group homes are audited for quality care by the State Department of Health, the Long Term Care Division; Family and Social Services Level of Care Team; and the Indiana Fire Marshall's Office. The homes are licensed by the Division of Disability and Rehabilitation's Community Residential Facilities Council.
You are invited to contact the social worker or the Residential Division for additional information or a group home tour. The enrollment process is managed by the Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Seymour district office and can be reached at 812-522-5859.
